Discolored hot water is the heater or the plumbing writing you a note, and the color plus the pattern usually identifies the author. First test: hot only, or both?

Fill two glasses, one pure cold, one pure hot, and look.

Hot-only suspect one: stirred sediment

Color: tan, cloudy, sandy, sometimes with visible grit that settles in the glass. Pattern: appears after heavy use or after anything that agitated the tank, then improves as the tank rests. This is the sediment bed getting stirred into the outlet flow, and it often travels with the popping soundtrack.
