Aluminum: the endurance option
Aluminum corrodes slower, so it lasts longer, commonly twice a magnesium rod’s life, and it tolerates hard water and higher temperatures better. The tradeoffs: weaker protective current, which matters most on older tanks with tired linings; a corrosion byproduct that accumulates as gray gel or paste in the tank bottom, adding to the sediment the flush must remove; and a longstanding, unresolved consumer debate about aluminum in hot water, which no regulator has acted on but which sends cautious buyers to magnesium.

Aluminum-zinc: the odor fix
The rods sold as zinc are aluminum alloyed with roughly 10 percent zinc, and that zinc fraction does one specific job: it suppresses the hydrogen sulfide reaction. For a tank with sulfur smell, swapping a magnesium rod for aluminum-zinc is the standard first-line fix and it works in a majority of cases, usually paired with a peroxide shock to kill the existing colony. Otherwise it behaves like aluminum: long life, gentler protection.

Where powered rods enter
