Inspection: the 2-to-3-year ritual

The rod hides under a hex head on top of the tank, sometimes exposed, sometimes under a plastic cap or the insulation, and on some models it shares the hot water outlet port. The routine:

  1. Kill power or set gas to pilot, close the cold inlet, and relieve pressure at a hot tap.
  2. Drain 2 to 3 gallons from the tank so the port sits above water level.
