Why this job exists

The bed insulates the burner from the water, burns out electric elements, causes the popping and rumbling of steam escaping trapped water, and shortens tank life. What you need
A garden hose, a place lower than the tank for it to drain (floor drain, driveway, utility sink), work gloves, and optionally a wet/dry vacuum for stubborn valve clogs. No pump is needed; house pressure and gravity do the work. This is a simpler job than the recirculating flush a tankless unit requires, though suppliers of tankless kits, Chromex included, sell the tank-side hardware too.
The procedure
- Kill the heat. Gas: control to pilot or off. Electric: breaker off, no exceptions, because an element exposed to air while energized destroys itself almost instantly.
- Close the cold inlet valve on top of the tank.
- Open a hot tap at a nearby sink and leave it open. This breaks the vacuum and lets the tank drain.
- Connect the hose to the drain valve at the tank bottom, run it to your drain point, and mind that the first water out is scalding if you skipped the cool-down. Impatient people flush hot carefully; patient people wait a few hours.
- Open the drain valve fully and let the tank empty. Expect cloudy water, white or tan grit, and possibly chunks. That is the job working.
- Stir and rinse. With the drain still open, open the cold inlet in bursts of 15 to 30 seconds, three or four times. The incoming jet stirs the remaining sediment off the floor and the drain carries it out. Continue until the discharge runs clear. This step is the difference between flushing and merely draining, and it is the step most instructions omit.
- Close the drain valve, remove the hose, open the cold inlet, and let the tank fill with the upstairs hot tap still open. When water runs steadily from that tap with no air sputter, the tank is full.
- Restore the heat. Relight per the label or flip the breaker, and only once the tank is confirmed full.
- Check the drain valve for weeping. Cheap factory plastic valves often drip after their first real use. A hose cap stops a minor weep; a brass ball valve replacement at the next opportunity fixes it properly.
The stubborn cases
Drain trickles instead of flows: sediment is clogging the valve. Cycle the valve closed and open, pulse the cold inlet to stir, or press a wet/dry vacuum hose against the drain to pull the clog through. Valve seized shut: do not muscle it with a wrench and crack the fitting; that is a plumber call and likely a valve replacement. Tank never runs clear: a decade of accumulation may exceed what one session removes. Repeat the burst-and-drain cycle, then plan a follow-up flush in a month rather than chasing perfection today.
While you are down there
Two adjacent checks turn this into a full service. Lift the temperature and pressure relief valve lever briefly to confirm it flows and reseats. And if the tank is 4 or more years old with an unknown anode history, put an anode rod inspection on the list, because that rod is what stands between the steel tank and rust.
How often
Annually as a baseline, every six months above 7 grains per gallon of hardness, per the same logic as the tankless schedule. The job gets easier the more regularly it happens, because sediment that never consolidates rinses out like sand instead of breaking loose like shale.
