A water heater making popping noises is almost always telling you about sediment, but the tank makes several distinct sounds and they have different meanings, a couple of them urgent. This diagnostic sorts the noises by sound, tells you which is which, and matches each to its fix.
Popping, percolating, crackling: sediment
The classic complaint and the benign-sounding one with expensive implications. Water trapped beneath the sediment bed superheats against the tank bottom and flashes to steam, and each pop is a steam bubble violently escaping through the mineral layer. It is loudest during recovery after heavy hot water use, when the burner runs longest.
The sound itself hurts nothing. What it certifies is that a layer of mineral is insulating the burner from the water, which means fuel wasted, recovery slowed, and tank steel running hotter than design, the damage chain laid out in HARD WATER AND SCALE. Rumbling: sediment, advanced course
A deep rumble or boiling-pot sound during firing is the same steam mechanism at larger scale, whole sections of the bed lifting and collapsing. Same diagnosis, same fix, more urgency: rumbling tanks are further along the curve, and on electric units a rumble often accompanies a lower element entombed in scale and heading for burnout.
Sizzling or hissing: two suspects
On a gas unit, sizzle can be condensate dripping onto the burner, normal in short episodes during heavy cold-water refill, or a slow tank leak dripping onto hot surfaces, which is not normal at all. Look for moisture at the base and rust tracks down the tank jacket. Persistent hissing on an electric unit is often an element cooking through its scale jacket. A hiss from the T&P relief valve is the one that outranks everything: a relief valve passing water or steam is reporting a pressure or temperature problem, and it gets same-day attention.
Banging when taps close: not the heater
A sharp single bang when a washing machine, dishwasher, or faucet shuts off is water hammer, a piping phenomenon that has nothing to do with the tank even though the sound seems to come from that direction. Ticking and creaking: usually just physics
Rhythmic ticking as the tank heats and cools is thermal expansion of the tank, its nipples, and nearby piping rubbing on framing. Harmless, if annoying, and often quieted by adjusting pipe straps or adding cushioned clamps. Heat trap nipples on newer heaters also tick as their check balls seat and unseat. The exception worth noting: a single loud crack from inside an aging tank can be the glass lining fracturing, undetectable from outside but a reason a formerly quiet tank starts popping soon after.
Reading the noise timeline
New noise on an old, never-flushed tank: sediment until proven otherwise. Noise from day one on a new install: expansion ticking or hammer, since a new tank has no bed yet. Noise that arrived with a new well pump or pressure change: hammer. Noise plus discolored hot water: sediment stirring or corrosion progressing, and time to inspect the anode rod while you are at it.
The bottom line
Pops and rumbles are steam under sediment and a flush is the cure; sizzles need a leak check; bangs are the pipes, not the tank; ticks are thermal theater; and anything involving the relief valve is today’s problem, not the weekend’s.
