Water heater sediment is the mineral bed that accumulates on the bottom of a tank, and it is the quiet tax on nearly every tank heater in hard water country. It steals capacity, wastes fuel, makes noise, and shortens tank life, all gradually enough that owners rarely notice until the symptoms stack up. Where sediment comes from

Two sources feed the bed. Shrinking hot water. The bed displaces gallons and, on electric units, buries the lower element so only the upper one effectively works. A household that suddenly cannot finish two showers on a tank that used to handle three is describing sediment.

Element burnout on electrics. A lower element crusted in scale overheats and fails. Replacing the element without flushing the tank replaces it into the same grave.

What it costs

The efficiency loss is real but the lifespan loss is the expensive part.
