Galvanized steel was the standard American water supply pipe for the first two thirds of the twentieth century, and every foot of it still in service is now living past its design life. Galvanized pipe replacement is therefore less a question of if than of sequencing: the pipe fails from the inside out, on a schedule you can read in the symptoms. How it fails: rust from the inside out
Galvanized pipe is steel with a sacrificial zinc coating, the same protective logic as a water heater’s anode rod, and it works until the zinc is consumed. Then the steel corrodes, and it corrodes inward: rust and mineral scale build as tubercles on the pipe interior, narrowing a half-inch line toward a pencil’s diameter over decades. The symptoms, by stage
Falling pressure and flow, worst on hot. The signature: a decades-long decline in flow, especially at the farthest fixtures, from internal narrowing rather than supply problems, one distinct branch of the low pressure diagnostic.
Discolored first draws. Brown or rusty water at the morning’s first tap that clears with running is the pipe shedding overnight corrosion, and when it appears on both hot and cold it separates pipe corrosion from the water heater’s own rust story.
Rust at the joints. Visible corrosion blooms, weeping, and rust stalactites at threaded fittings in the basement are the pipe failing where it always fails first, and each one is a leak on layaway.
Leaks, then more leaks. The first pinhole or joint failure in a galvanized system is rarely the last; it is the cohort reaching end of life together, which is the practical argument that turns repairs into a repipe conversation.
The lead question
Two lead pathways ride along with old galvanized systems and are worth naming plainly. Houses of the era sometimes had lead service lines upstream, and galvanized pipe downstream of one accumulates lead in its corrosion scale, releasing it unpredictably even after the service line is replaced. And historic zinc coatings carried lead as an impurity. Neither means panic; both mean a first-draw lead test (cheap through any certified lab) and the standing habit of running taps briefly before drinking from an old system.
The repipe decision
Do nothing, knowingly. A galvanized system still delivering acceptable flow, with no active leaks, can run a while yet, with eyes open: know where the main shutoff is, watch the joints, and budget for the inevitable.
Partial replacement. Repiping the worst offenders first, the hot lines, exposed basement runs, and any section that has already leaked, buys real improvement at fractional cost, with one rule attached: copper joined directly to steel creates a galvanic corrosion cell that eats the steel side faster, so transitions get dielectric unions or brass buffers, always.

Galvanized pipe is a sacrificial system whose sacrifice ended decades ago: it narrows, stains, and then leaks in cohorts. Read your stage in the flow and the joints, test for lead rather than wondering, transition metals properly if you repipe in parts, and treat the first leak as the system’s retirement announcement rather than an isolated event.
