The water meter is the most underused diagnostic instrument on the property: it measures every drop entering, which makes it a leak detector of absolute authority. Reading the meter

The meter lives in a ground box near the street or curb (warm climates), or indoors where the service enters (cold climates), the same geography as the main shutoff. Stage two: inside or underground?

Now close the main shutoff valve where the service enters the house, and read the indicator again.
