A toilet that keeps running is the most common plumbing complaint in the country and the most fixable: the tank contains exactly three moving parts, each fails in a distinctive way, and each replacement is a ten-minute job with no tools beyond hands and maybe pliers. This diagnostic names the part and the toilet keeps running fix that goes with it.

Meet the machine

Lift the lid. The flapper is the rubber seal at the tank bottom, lifted by a chain when the handle presses, sealing the tank between flushes. The fill valve is the tower on the left, refilling tank and bowl after each flush and shutting off at the set level. The overflow tube is the open standpipe in the middle: the tank’s safety drain, and, diagnostically, its confession booth, because water running into it means the fill valve has overshot. Everything a running toilet does is one of these three misbehaving.

The two-minute diagnosis

Look at the overflow tube first. Water trickling over its top means the fill valve is not shutting off: the level is set too high, or the valve is failing. Level too high is an adjustment (a screw or slide clip on modern valves) to bring water about an inch below the tube’s rim. A valve that ignores its adjustment, hisses continuously, or cycles is done: replace it.

Then run the dye test. Level fine, but the toilet refills periodically on its own (the phantom flush) or the bowl shows constant movement: food coloring in the tank, wait 15 to 20 minutes without flushing, and color in the bowl convicts the flapper seal. This silent leak is the expensive one, invisible, constant, and behind more shocking water bills than any other fixture, the same leak the meter test catches house-wide.

Check the dumb stuff while the lid is off. A chain too tight holds the flapper cracked open; too loose, it tangles under the flapper and does the same. A handle that sticks down keeps the flapper up. Thirty seconds of chain adjustment resolves a surprising share of cases before any parts are bought.

The repairs

Flapper (the usual suspect). Water off at the fixture stop, flush to empty the tank, unhook the old flapper from its ears and chain, and match the replacement, size (2 or 3 inch) and, for best results, brand-fit, since universal flappers on calibrated modern toilets cause weak flushes and repeat leaks. While there, run a finger around the seat the flapper lands on: mineral crust or a rough seat causes leaks a new flapper will not cure, and a scrub, or a seat repair kit for pitted seats, finishes the job. Chronic flapper death in a chlorine-tablet tank is the tablets’ doing; in-tank chlorine chews rubber, and moving the chemical to the bowl saves the next three flappers.

Fill valve. Water off, flush, sponge the last inch out, unthread the supply line and the valve’s locknut under the tank, drop in the new valve (modern float-cup valves fit nearly everything), set height and level per its instructions, reconnect, and check for drips at the locknut. The old ballcock-and-float-arm assemblies are worth replacing on sight rather than repairing.

The refill tube detail. The small hose from fill valve to overflow tube must clip above the tube’s rim, not dangle down inside it, or it siphons the tank slowly and mimics a flapper leak, a famous head-scratcher that costs nothing to fix.

When it is not the tank

Water at the floor rather than sounds in the tank changes the case: base leaks are the wax ring’s story, told in the sewer smell diagnostic, and tank-to-bowl gasket weeps show as drips between the pieces. And a toilet that runs because it clogs and refills poorly belongs to the drain side instead. The tank parts only ever waste water; they do not put it on the floor.

The bottom line

Overflow tube tells on the fill valve, dye tells on the flapper, and the chain tells on itself. Three parts, ten-minute swaps, and the reward is measured on the next water bill, where the silent flapper leak was quietly the most expensive fixture in the house.
