A slow drain is a message, and slow drain diagnosis is mostly about reading the address on it: one fixture means a local blockage, several fixtures mean the main line or the vents, and gurgling anywhere means air is involved. Chemicals, meanwhile, belong at the end of the list, not the beginning. This diagnostic sorts the cases.
First question: one drain, or many?
One fixture slow, everything else fine: local problem, between that drain and where its branch joins the system. Bathroom sinks and tubs accumulate hair-and-soap felt at the stopper and trap; kitchen sinks grow grease and coffee-ground concrete; each is usually within arm’s or small-snake’s reach.
Multiple fixtures slow, or the lowest fixture backing up: the trunk is involved, the building drain or main sewer line, and clearing individual traps will accomplish nothing. On septic properties, whole-house slowness is the classic opening line of a full tank or a struggling field, worth ruling out before renting equipment.

The vent question nobody asks
Drains need air behind the water, supplied by the vent system, or flow strangles and traps siphon, the plumbing physics covered in HOW TRAPS AND VENTS WORK. A drain that is slow and gurgles, or a fixture that drains better with another tap running, is describing vent starvation, commonly a roof vent capped with leaves, a nest, or snow. The diagnosis is a look at the roof termination, and the cure is whatever is sitting in it. Chemical cleaner poured at a vent problem dissolves nothing but the budget.
Mechanical clearing, in escalation order
The stopper and strainer. Bathroom sink stoppers lift or unscrew, and the felt of hair on the pivot rod is, statistically, the answer. A cheap plastic barbed strip does the same for tubs.
The plunger, used correctly. A cup plunger on a sink or tub, with the overflow blocked by a wet rag so pressure works on the clog rather than venting past it, clears soft blockages a chemical would only soften.
The trap. The P-trap under a sink unscrews by hand or with channel locks, bucket underneath, and most kitchen clogs live right there or in the trap arm behind it, visible and removable.
The snake. A 25-foot hand auger reaches branch-line clogs beyond the trap; a closet auger is the toilet-specific version that spares the porcelain. Feed, crank through resistance, retrieve, and expect to pull the cause out with it.
The pros’ machinery. Repeated clogs in the same line, or main-line involvement, graduate to a drain machine or hydro-jetting and, wisely, a camera, because recurring blockage at one address usually has a structural author: a bellied pipe, roots, or a failing joint, per the main line article.
Where chemicals actually fit
Last, and narrowly. Caustic and oxidizing openers work best on the soft organic clogs that a plunger clears anyway; they fail against roots, objects, and mineral; they heat and stress old metal pipe; standing in a fully blocked fixture, they turn the water into a hazard for the next tool or person in the line; and they are unwelcome in septic biology. Enzyme-based maintenance products are the gentler cousin, useful as prevention on grease-prone lines, useless in an emergency. The honest chemical policy: prevention enzymes if you like, one cautious application of opener on a slow (never fully stopped) bathroom drain if you must, and mechanical clearing for everything else.
Prevention, the boring victory
Strainers on every tub and shower, grease into the trash rather than the kitchen drain, hot-water-and-soap flushes for the disposal line, and a yearly glance at roof vents. Slow drains are the most preventable recurring problem in the house, which is exactly why the chemical aisle is so well stocked.
The bottom line
Count the slow fixtures, listen for gurgles, and clear mechanically from stopper to trap to snake, saving chemicals for the narrow case they serve. One drain is a local story, many drains are the main line’s, and gurgling is the vents asking to be checked before anything gets poured.
