The septic tank pumping schedule exists because the tank is a separator with a finite storage compartment: bacteria shrink what settles, but the indigestible remainder accumulates year over year, and pumping is simply hauling that remainder away before it overflows into the drain field. With the tank empty comes the only good look anyone ever gets at its health: inlet and outlet baffles or tees intact (failed baffles are the most common defect and the direct route for scum to reach the field), the effluent filter cleaned if one exists (and worth adding if not), liquid level normal before pumping (a level above the outlet suggests field trouble; below, a leaking tank), and the tank structure sound.
