Descaling a tankless water heater means circulating an acid solution through the heat exchanger to dissolve mineral buildup, and once the unit has service valves, it is a genuinely homeowner-level job. This is the complete procedure, including the steps that separate a real descaling from an expensive rinse.

Equipment

A small submersible pump with enough lift for a wall-mounted unit, two hoses with 3/4 inch connections, a 5 gallon bucket, and your flushing agent: household vinegar, 20% cleaning vinegar, or a formulated descaler, chosen by water hardness per VINEGAR VS. The prerequisite is a set of isolation valves with service ports on the unit. No valves, no flush.

The procedure

  1. Shut down. Electric: breaker off. Gas: power off and gas valve closed. The unit must not fire during the flush.
  2. Isolate. Close the hot (red) and cold (blue) isolation valves. The unit is now sealed off from house plumbing.
  3. Relieve pressure. Crack the hot service port cap slowly with a rag handy; a little trapped water will escape.
  4. Connect. Pump outlet hose to the cold service port, return hose from the hot service port back to the bucket. Open both service ports.
  5. Load the bucket. 3 to 4 gallons of flushing agent, enough to keep the pump fully submerged.
  6. Circulate. Run the pump: 60 to 90 minutes for 5% vinegar, 30 to 45 minutes for 20% vinegar or a formulated descaler. You will often see the solution fizz and discolor early on. That is scale dissolving, and heavy early fizzing on a neglected unit is a hint that a second round with fresh solution may be worth it.
  7. Dump and rinse. Pump out or discard the spent solution. Now the step that makes it a clean job: close the cold service port, reopen the cold isolation valve, and let fresh supply water flow through the exchanger and out the hot service port hose to the bucket for 5 to 10 minutes. This purges dissolved mineral and residual acid completely.
  8. Clean the inlet filter. With the cold isolation valve closed again, unscrew the inlet filter plug, rinse the screen, reinstall. Two minutes, universally skipped, and half the payoff of the visit.
  9. Restore. Close service ports, open both isolation valves, restore gas and power, then run a hot tap and confirm steady temperature and flow.
  10. Log it. Date and agent used, because the warranty quietly depends on this record.

The mistakes that spoil the job

Cutting circulation short is the big one: twenty minutes of 5% vinegar is a rinse, not a descaling. Skipping the fresh-water purge leaves acid and dissolved mineral in the exchanger. Skipping the inlet filter leaves a symptom generator in place. Running the pump dry burns it out mid-job.
