A dead outlet is the most common electrical service call and the one with the highest solved-before-the-electrician-arrives rate, because the leading outlet not working causes are not failures at all: a tripped protective device elsewhere, or a switch someone flipped. This diagnostic runs the checklist in payoff order, decodes the three-light tester, and marks the honest line where DIY ends.

The checklist, in order

One: the panel, properly. Breakers trip to a subtle middle position; reset means firmly off, then on, per the panel basics. While there, a breaker that re-trips converts this into the tripping-breaker diagnosis instead.

Two: every GFCI in the house. One GFCI outlet protects everything downstream, and downstream follows the wiring, not the floor plan: bathroom outlets ride garage GFCIs, exterior outlets ride basement ones, and the tripped reset button hides behind storage boxes with remarkable consistency. Pressing reset on every GFCI in the house, garage and exterior included, resurrects more dead outlets than every other step combined.

Three: the switch on the wall. Half-switched outlets, one receptacle live, one controlled by a wall switch for a lamp, are standard construction in living rooms and bedrooms, and the mystery outlet often just wants its switch flipped, or has a lamp-days configuration the current furniture forgot.

Four: the neighbors. Outlets wire in chains, so a dead outlet with live neighbors usually means the failure sits at the last working outlet or the first dead one, a connection let go mid-run. Which leads directly to the leading physical culprit.

The backstab problem

Residential outlets offer two wiring methods: side screws that clamp the conductor, and push-in “backstab” holes gripping it with a spring, a production-speed feature whose spring tension relaxes over years of heating and cooling under load. The result is the signature intermittent: an outlet, or a whole chain past it, that dies, revives with a bump, flickers lamps per the flickering catalog, or crackles faintly. Open ground: common in pre-1960s two-wire houses, where the honest fixes are the grounding reference’s menu, rewiring or labeled GFCI, and where a modern-cable house showing it has a disconnected ground worth finding. Reversed polarity: hot and neutral swapped, leaving lamp shells and appliance internals energized when they should be neutral, a prompt and usually simple correction at the outlet or the one upstream. Open neutral or open hot: dead or half-dead behavior, typically the failed-connection story above, with open neutrals deserving extra respect since they can push odd voltages through shared circuits. The tester cannot certify wiring health, but its failures are always real findings.

Replace-on-sight conditions

Some outlets end the diagnosis by their own condition: plugs that sag or fall out (worn contacts, which means resistance, which means heat), cracked or scorched faces, warmth under ordinary load, or any melting odor. Worn receptacles are wear items with a fire-adjacent failure mode and a trivial price; high-use locations, kitchens, vacuum outlets, shop walls, simply consume them. Replacement is also the natural upgrade moment: tamper-resistant is now standard, GFCI where the location’s wet-area rules suggest, and proper side-screw terminations as the quiet point of the whole exercise.

The bottom line

Panel firmly cycled, every GFCI reset, wall switches tried, then suspicion aimed at the backstabs in the dead outlet and its last live neighbor. Let the three-light tester name the miswires, replace anything loose, scorched, or warm on sight, and hand instant re-trips, aluminum conductors, and anything behind the dead front to the trade built for them.
