Ordinary breakers protect wires from overcurrent and nothing else: a person completing a circuit to ground, or a loose connection arcing behind a wall, can proceed to injury or ignition without ever approaching the 15 amps that would wake a standard breaker. GFCI vs AFCI is not a competition but a division of labor over those two gaps, shock and fire, and modern codes have spread both technologies across the house. GFCI: the people-protector
A ground fault circuit interrupter continuously compares current leaving on the hot with current returning on the neutral. Balance means all electricity stayed in the circuit; an imbalance of a few thousandths of an amp means current found another path out, possibly through a person to ground, and the device opens in a fraction of a second, below the threshold and duration that stop hearts. That mechanism is why GFCI territory is everywhere water and grounded surfaces meet electricity: bathrooms, kitchen counters, garages, unfinished basements, exteriors, laundry, and crawl spaces, the geography where a fault has both a path and a victim.
GFCI arrives in three forms: the familiar outlet with test and reset buttons, the breaker version protecting a whole circuit from the panel, and the portable inline units that belong on job-site cords. The form factor detail that resolves most confusion: one GFCI outlet typically protects everything wired downstream of it, so the dead bathroom outlet with no buttons is very often waiting on a tripped GFCI in another bathroom, the garage, or behind the boxes in the basement, the first stop in the dead outlet diagnosis.
AFCI: the fire-watcher
An arc fault circuit interrupter listens for the electrical signature of arcing: the erratic, high-frequency chaos produced when current jumps a gap at a damaged cord, a nail-nicked cable, a chewed wire, or a loose terminal sputtering behind a plate. Series and parallel arcs at those flaws generate intense localized heat without tripping ordinary breakers, which is precisely the ignition path behind a large share of electrical fires, and the AFCI’s electronics distinguish that chaos from the benign arcs of switches and motor brushes, opening the circuit when the dangerous pattern appears. Code has expanded AFCI coverage across bedrooms and most living areas in new work, delivered by AFCI breakers, AFCI outlets, and dual-function devices combining both protections in one body, an economical answer where both jurisdictions of protection overlap, as at kitchens and laundries.
Testing, tripping, and nuisance
Both technologies carry test buttons because both are electronics that age: monthly, press test, confirm the circuit dies, press reset, and replace any device that fails either half of that ritual, GFCIs in particular having a finite sensing lifespan that ends in either constant tripping or, worse, silent non-protection. Interpreting real trips follows each device’s specialty. A GFCI tripping repeatedly is reporting leakage: moisture in an exterior or garage box after weather, a failing appliance (freezers and old tools are famous), or accumulated leakage across too many downstream loads, and the unplug-and-bisect method localizes it. An AFCI tripping repeatedly is reporting arcing signatures: loose connections and damaged cables deserve first suspicion, especially in houses with aluminum branch wiring or amateur splice history, though certain electronics have documented nuisance interactions worth an electrician’s sorting rather than a homeowner’s overriding. In every case the forbidden move is the same: replacing the protective device with an unprotected one to make the tripping stop is removing the smoke detector because it keeps going off.
The bottom line
GFCI counts electrons out and back and saves the person standing in the gap; AFCI listens for the sound of insulation failing and saves the wall.
