Grounding is the most misunderstood system in residential wiring, partly because the word covers two different jobs: connecting the electrical system to the earth, and connecting all the metal in the system to itself and back to the panel. Electrical grounding basics come down to that distinction, because the second job, bonding, is the one that actually saves lives when a wire touches a metal case. This reference sorts the jobs, tours the hardware, and covers the two places homeowners meet the system: old ungrounded outlets and plumbing work that interrupts a bond.

Two jobs, one green wire family

Bonding clears faults. Every metal appliance case, box, and fixture connects through the bare or green equipment grounding conductors back to the panel, where grounds and neutrals tie together at the main bonding jumper. The point is a low-resistance highway: when a hot wire contacts a bonded metal case, current floods back through that path, the breaker sees a dead short and trips instantly, and the case never sits there energized waiting for a hand. No bond, and the same fault leaves the case silently live at 120 volts, with the next person to touch it and a grounded surface completing the circuit, the scenario GFCI protection exists to survive.

Grounding steadies the system. The connection to actual earth, through ground rods and other electrodes, does different work: draining lightning and utility surge energy, stabilizing voltage relative to earth, and giving surge protection somewhere to send what it clamps. What earth connection does not do, and this is the central misconception, is trip breakers on ordinary faults: dirt is a poor conductor, and the earth path alone cannot carry fault current enough to clear a breaker, which is exactly why bonding exists as its own job.

The hardware tour

At the service: one or two ground rods driven outside near the meter, the grounding electrode conductor running to them from the panel, and, where metal water pipe enters the house, a required connection to that pipe within its first feet, the pipe serving as an additional electrode. In the panel: the neutral bar bonded to the enclosure and ground bar at the main service only, a distinction (separated grounds and neutrals in subpanels) that electricians police because current on grounding paths is precisely what the design forbids in normal operation. Through the house: the equipment grounding conductor in every modern cable, landing on every device’s green screw and every metal box.

Where plumbing meets it

The water-pipe electrode carries an obligation with a plumbing-shaped trap: the metal piping must stay electrically continuous and bonded, both to serve as an electrode and so the plumbing itself can never become energized without clearing a fault. Replace a section of metal pipe with PEX during a repipe, install a plastic-bodied meter, filter, or water softener, or add dielectric isolation, and the continuity breaks; the answer is bonding jumper cables around the interruption, a standard detail worth speaking aloud between the plumber and the electrician rather than discovering at inspection. Gas piping carries its own bonding rules, particularly where CSST flexible gas line is present, another line item for the professional visit.

Ungrounded outlets, honestly handled

Pre-1960s two-wire houses, knob and tube foremost, have no equipment ground to offer, and the legitimate menu is short: rewire the circuits (the real fix, priced accordingly); protect receptacles with GFCI, outlet or breaker, and apply the required “GFCI Protected / No Equipment Ground” labels, which protects people fully while honestly admitting that surge strips and grounded-case equipment still lack their ground; or leave two-prong outlets as the truthful hardware they are. The illegitimate move is the ungrounded three-prong outlet, whose empty ground slot promises every plugged-in device a path that does not exist, and the folk remedy of a wire to the nearest water pipe fails both code and physics on modern mixed-material plumbing. A three-light plug-in tester, for all its limits, identifies open grounds and the miswired-outlet catalog in seconds and belongs in every old-house toolkit.

The bottom line

Bonding is the fault highway that trips breakers; earthing is the surge drain and voltage anchor; and the green-wire system is both at once. Keep the water-pipe bond continuous through every plumbing project, handle ungrounded circuits with rewiring or labeled GFCIs rather than cosmetic three-prong outlets, and leave the neutral-ground marriage where it belongs, at the main panel only.
