Vinyl siding is the most common cladding in America and the most commonly misunderstood: it is designed to hang loose, move with temperature, and shed most of the water while a barrier behind it does the real waterproofing. Nearly all vinyl siding problems trace to violations of those three ideas, panels nailed tight, movement blocked, or a wall assembly that trusted the vinyl to be a raincoat. The movement rule, and buckling
Vinyl expands and contracts more than any common cladding, a long panel moving a half inch or more across a temperature swing, and the entire installation system exists to permit it: nailing slots (not holes) so panels hang on loose nails rather than being pinned, fasteners driven with a gap behind the head, panels cut short of the trim channels to leave expansion room, and locks between courses that hold alignment while allowing slide. The signature failure is buckling and oil-canning, waves and ripples appearing in summer heat, and its diagnosis is almost always a nail: driven tight through the slot’s center, pinning the panel so heat expansion has nowhere to go but outward. The related sins read the same way, panels jammed hard into J-channel at the ends, caulked into trim (vinyl is never caulked at its movement joints), or face-nailed through the panel itself, and the repairs are unlock-and-renail work with the zip tool rather than replacement. The distinction worth keeping: seasonal, temperature-correlated waviness is installation; a bulge that stays put in all weather is asking what happened to the sheathing behind it, per the rot inspection.
Cracking, melting, and fade
Cold cracking: vinyl embrittles in freezing weather, and winter impacts, a thrown snow chunk, a ladder, hail per the hail-evidence rules, crack panels that would have bounced the same hit in July, favoring older, sun-aged panels whose plasticizers have retired. Melt and distortion: vinyl softens at temperatures ordinary sunlight cannot reach but focused sunlight can, and the era’s documented oddity is low-e window reflections, energy-efficient glass on a neighboring house concentrating light into a moving hot stripe that ripples siding across the yard, with grills against the wall and reflective landscape features as the closer-range versions; fixes run from relocating the grill to screening the reflection path. Fade and chalking: UV fades all vinyl unevenly by exposure, which is cosmetic, and matters mainly because it defeats future patch-matching, the argument for storing leftover panels from any siding job. Painting faded vinyl is legitimate with vinyl-safe formulations in similar-or-lighter shades, dark paint on light vinyl being a self-inflicted heat-absorption experiment.
What is behind the panels is the point
Vinyl is a rain screen: water gets behind it routinely, at laps, weep holes, and every wind-driven storm, by design, and the wall stays dry because the weather-resistive barrier (house wrap or felt) and the flashing at windows, doors, and roof lines shed that water back out. The practical consequences: siding condition is a weak proxy for wall condition, the interior and sill evidence outranking exterior appearance; any siding repair or panel-off moment is the inspection opportunity for the wrap and flashing that matter; and the bottom course’s relationship to grade follows the same six-inch clearance rules as every cladding. Maintenance rounds out short: an annual rinse (garden hose and soft brush, never pressure washing upward into the laps, which injects water past the barrier), locks re-seated where wind lifted a course, and the zip-tool panel swap for cracks, minutes of work when matching stock exists.
The bottom line
Vinyl hangs loose or it buckles, cracks when cold and hit, melts only under focused reflections, and was never the waterproofing anyway. Renail the pinned panels with room to move, keep spares for the fade problem, wash downward not upward, and spend your inspection attention on the wrap and flashing behind it, where the wall’s real weather story is written.
