A refrigerator is a small heat pump with the same two vulnerabilities as its big cousins: it must dump heat through coils that stay clean, and move cold through air paths that stay open. A refrigerator not cooling coils checklist therefore starts with dust and fans, not refrigerant, and the split of symptoms between fridge and freezer sections does most of the diagnosis by itself. How the cold actually moves
One evaporator, almost always in the freezer section, makes all the cold; an evaporator fan circulates freezer air across it and shares a metered portion with the fresh-food section through a vent and damper. Heat leaves through the condenser coils (under or behind the unit), pushed by a condenser fan, and a defrost system (heater, timer or board, and thermostat) periodically melts the evaporator’s frost so the airway stays open. Every common failure is one of those components losing, and the symptom split reads the map: both sections warm points at the heat-dumping side (condenser coils, condenser fan, compressor); freezer cold, fridge warm points at the cold-distribution side (evaporator fan, defrost failure frosting the airway shut, blocked vents or damper).
The checklist
One: the condenser coils. Under-unit or rear coils blanketed in dust and pet hair cannot dump heat: the unit runs constantly, cools weakly, and wears its compressor doing it. Unplug, pull the base grille or roll the unit out, vacuum and brush the coils, and confirm the little condenser fan beside the compressor spins free and comes on with the unit, the yearly ritual that prevents the majority of this article.
Two: airflow and habits. Overpacked sections blocking the vents (the fridge’s supply comes through specific openings, and a bread bag against them starves the section), a fridge crammed against cabinetry without its clearance, hot-kitchen or garage placement beyond the unit’s rated ambient range, and doors that do not seal, the dollar-bill gasket test (a bill closed in the door should drag when pulled) finding the failed gaskets that let humid air in, frost the evaporator, and run the unit around the clock.
Three: the evaporator fan. Fridge warm, freezer working, and no fan sound from the freezer when the doors are closed (many units stop the fan when a door opens, so the door switch gets pressed by hand to test): the fan or its motor. A fan that chirps, grinds, or is silent, or a freezer back wall of solid frost muffling it, names the next suspect too.
Four: the defrost system. A freezer back panel frosted into a glacier means defrost has failed, heater, thermostat, or control, and the frost has sealed the airway to the fridge section: the confirming move is a manual defrost (unit off, doors open, towels down, a day of patience), after which cooling returns until the frost rebuilds on a one-to-two-week schedule, the recurrence proving the diagnosis and pricing a modest parts repair.
Five: the sealed system. With coils clean, fans spinning, and defrost sound, the remainder, compressor and refrigerant circuit, is professional diagnosis and usually the repair-or-replace conversation: a compressor that hums and clicks off (start components are the one cheap exception), runs hot and constant with clean coils, or a unit with an actual leak, all price against replacement badly on ordinary household machines past mid-life.
The supporting cast
Two adjacent complaints share the visit: water on the floor under a fridge is the defrost drain clogged (the condensate-slime economy in miniature, cleared with warm water down the drain channel) or the icemaker’s supply line weeping, the latter being classic hidden-leak and floor-damage country worth a braided line and a glance at every coil cleaning; and warm-after-moving units usually just need hours upright and patience rather than parts. A thermometer in each section (34 to 40°F fridge, around 0°F freezer) turns every future complaint into data.
The bottom line
Both sections warm: clean the coils and check the condenser fan. Fridge warm, freezer fine: evaporator fan, defrost frost-over, or blocked vents. Test the gaskets with a dollar, vacuum the coils yearly, thaw-and-observe to convict the defrost system, and let the compressor’s verdict be the retirement notice it usually is.
